Re: socialism v. capitalism?

I agree with George's response to Bill Mandel's comment: "And the economic
record shows
that a market economy, for all its ups and downs and
unfairness and cruelty, brings a higher living standard to a
larger proportion of the people than does Marxist socialism. " But I would
also draw attention to Bill's statement that follows this: "That's why
illiterate Haitian peasants, Chinese who have
earned or borrowed enough to stuff themselves into the holds
of smuggling ships, Israeli and Russian Ph.Ds, all do their
damnest to emigrate to the U.S." The question not raised by Bill's remarks
is: To what extent have other countries had to be kept in a state of
economic dependency and its workers in a state of imiseration in order to
create a standard on living in the United States so attractive to the
Israeli and Russian Ph.D.'s, not to mention the Haitian peasants and
Chinese? Is Bill trying to set up the US, the world's alpha male
imperialist nation, in possession of the world's mightiest military, as a
basis of comparison?
