I like the movies very much - boo to any bourgeois critics who disagree (most
UK critics like them).
But the LOTR book is really unreadable for anyone aged over about 21. Tolkein
used to insist on reading extracts from his meisterwerk to the assembled
"Inklings", the ghastly group of
tweedy Oxford Christian reactionaries to which both he and Lewis belonged.
As Tolkein began yet another chapter of his saga, it is alleged that a sigh was
heard from the back of the room - "Oh no, not another fucking elf ...".
Tolkeinists dispute the veracity of this story, but it deserves to be true.
