You can look at LOTR a lot of different ways.  If one takes into
account that C.S. Lewis and Tolkien were close friends, you might see a
lot of christian influence, i.e. the ring being sin.

In fact it was Tolkien who helped convert Lewis to christianity.

So read in what you like, it's more likely the conflict is light/dark,
good/evil, god/satan.  Not necessarly south-east, european-african, or
whatever else someone might think it is.  With perhaps the elves being
angels, and the deformed, evil elves being fallen angels. =]
