USED; today a car propelled by ethanol is a rarity in Brazil, as it was only
economically viable when there was a huge surplus of sugar in the world
market. Even so, it was heavily subsidized and gave a lease of time to a lot
of technologically (and political) backward and heavily indebted latifundia
in the Northeast and Northern Rio de Janeiro.
