Re: Anti-war movement, WWP, Liberals et al
>> Lou Proyect, I think, makes a bit of a
shibboleth of "broadness" which does add something useful to the debate
but he hasn't convinced me yet. <<
Look, the problem is that the WWP is doing today, in a more sophisticated
way, what they used to do in the anti-Vietnam war movement. Then, they were
known for running to the front of demonstrations that they did not
participate in organizing and unfurling colorful banners, thus appearing
to the unsophisticated to be leading the masses.
Today, they are out in front again, this time by quickly calling for a
demonstration date, getting the permits, and generally stealing a march on
less organized forces. In one sense, this is to their credit. They have
pulled off some audacious propaganda actions.
But we are moving beyond vanguard actions now. If we want to organize the
forces that can actually stop the war machine, we will have to find ways to
involve them from first to last. This will involve some serious heavy
lifting, politically speaking, if our goal is to see thousands of marching
workers in anti-war actions, organized to be there by their unions, with
John Sweeney, as well as Mike Letwin, on future rally platforms.
