The Chilean Army (FACH), and Navy, seem to have similar features.
Their officers academies recruit from the "better" neighborhoods.
"Better" means better educated --as well as what they think of
themselves. Officers therefore have built-in class loyalties.
It is quite clear to see on Armed Forces Day, on or around Spetember 11
as I recall: officers are taller and whiter.
In the society pages of El Mercurio there is always a photo or two of
some brass hat(s) at some hoity-toity do, posed very European and urbane
in their tailored uniforms. The masses in the ranks are satisfied to
have a job, and the martial macho pride that comes with the package (as
a booby prize, I guess).
