Iran leader warns US of new Vietnam in Iraq in talks
with visiting president

TEHRAN, Oct 21 (AFP) - Iran's supreme leader,
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned the United States that
military action against Iraq risked repeating the
humiliation of the Vietnam War in talks with President
Tran Duc Luong here Monday ahead of his return to
Hanoi.

"US military equipment has been strengthened but its
real power has not increased," state radio quoted
Khamenei as telling the visiting Vietnamese head of
state as he recalled his communist regime's 1975
defeat of the superpower.

"The United States may achieve some of its goals
through military action against Iraq, but such action
will harm the Americans in the long run due to growing
anti-US sentiment."

independence and are against domination by big powers.
These common points will pave the way for a boost in
bilateral ties."

Luong was due to leave Tehran later Monday after the
two-day visit on the way home from a Francophone
summit in Beirut.
