Saddam Hussein freed people in jail
I read a number of reports on the freeing of up to
150-200,000 people from Iraqi jails. It seems like
the regime decided to give freedom to EVERY prisoner,
not just the politicla prisoners.
While this may be interpreted positively as the first
step from the Iraqi government to defend itself from
the possible invasion from the US (freeing the
prisoners, particularly common prisoners would
undoubtedly bring some popularity to the regime and
will save millions of dollars and manpower to assign
them to defense, etc). If this move is followed by
some gestures from the regime towards the Kurds and
the Shiites (the base for sustained opposition to
Saddam Hussein) then we are probably in the road of
some very shrewd politicking by the Baath' Party and
the Military Council.
I cannot but think that is something more behind this
move, though.
It is hard to tell from the distance and without a
detailed knowledge of the national situation, the
relationship of forces inside Iraq and so on. But,
this measure could also means some kind of maneuvering
of the military against Hussein? Is it possible that
some kind of coup, whether agreed or not by Hussein,
could be on the works to pre-empt the US attack?
Does anyone have any more detailed info about the
internal situation in Iraq other the biased
generalities conveyed by the bourgeois media outside
Iraq?
