Vets' view

I've been a member of veterans' organizations for almost half a century and,
although opposed to War, am supportive of the individual -- I stress
individual -- welfare and well-being of United States [and Canadian]
military personnel. I have close extended family members on active duty. At
the same time, I keep up with other old buddies who, while not necessarily
in veterans' groups, still maintain interest and some identification with
the armed services. Although, as a sociologist, I'm aware of the inherent
problems involved in drawing conclusions from limited samples, I am very
pleasantly encouraged by the fact that I've encountered virtually no one in
any of those circles who is at all interested in seeing this country or
Canada pushed by "chicken hawks" [ themselves always safely perched, of
course, quite far and away] into Iraq War. Nor are these friends of mine
at all interested in dissecting the intricacies of the innards of Iraq and
its unsavoury regime. We are simply and vigorously opposed to Madness. No
more, no less. And we're certainly much concerned when such a bizarre
condition pervades our own North American governments.
