Re: Liberal redbaiting escalates

There were those of us who went to BOTH 1991 demos in DC
because we understood, like a lot of those who went, that
the protest was against WAR against Iraq and its people.

Here's the thing that I think a lot of historians miss:
many people join movements, and parties, for many reasons,
even for reasons that do not coincide with the purposes of the
leadership.

I've marched with folks, and I think you have, too, who may not agree
with all your reasons for being there, and you may not agree with all
theirs either. That's the way it goes.

I am amused in retrospect as I dredge up memories of standing next to a
critical curmudgeon cursing speakers on platforms in front of masses of
people, the pluperfect critic snarling in low tones that THAT so-and-so
was an idiot, and the next one was a liberal schmuck, and the one after
that some sort of opportunist traitor, until I asked what the heck they
were doing there, and they retorted that they were there for the same
reason as everybody else: to protest the war. And I later thought that
such contrarians are really always a part of our movement against the
status quo --almost by definition.
