The Dutch Socialist Party on the fall of the Balkenende Government
Brief statement of the Dutch Socialist Party on the fall of the Balkenende
Cabinet in the Netherlands (16 oct)
The SP looks forward to new elections which are the consequence of the fall
of the Balkende cabinet. "It's right that Premier Balkende calls an end to
this farcical display", said the leader of the SP parliamentary fraction,
Jan Marijnissen.
The SP regrets the way in which the parliamentary fraction and Ministers of
the Pim Fortuyn Party have handled their mandate from voters.
Marijnissen says, "First we got a Government Accord which did not reflect
what the voters asked for, next two Ministers of the same party get
embroiled in a fight and let their own petty interests prevail over the
country's interests. Me, me, me and stuff the rest".
The SP thinks it is great that voters will soon be able to voice their
opinion about the question of the future of the country.
"The answers which this government has formulated, were not the answers
which voters asked for, I am convinced of that. Very little came of the "new
political culture" which people asked for. As far as that is concerned, the
fall of the cabinet is a blessing - but the dominant feeling is really one
of substituted shame for the conduct of government affairs".
