4,000 immigrants rally against war, for amnesty and Civil Rights

As far as I know this was the ONLY event of this
characteristics, involving thousands of immigrants,
particularly Latinos in the US since 9/11.

SAN FRANCISCO, OCTOBER 12 - Immigrant Pride Day 2002

4,000 rally for "Papers for All" - unconditional and
immediate amnesty for all undocumented workers, in
defense of civil rights and for the repeal of the
Patriot Act and against the war. Most of the people
present were immigrants, the majority were Latinos.

Two stages with music and speakers that delivered the
message against war, racism and for civil liberties.
One mini- movie theater with political movies
throughout the day.

Speakers addressed the questions of the opposition to
Bush war on Iraq, the veto by California Governor
Davis of the drivers license bill, demanded the repeal
of the Patriot Act, spoke on civil liberties and
defended the arab-american community, spoke in favor
of the ILWU battle against the PMA and Bush imposing
the Taft-Hartley Act.

Initiated and organized by the Immigrants Rights
Movement (MDI) and the Left Party and endorsed by the
SF Labor Council, several locals of unions, community
and immigrant groups. The left, outside the Left
Party and the MDI did not participate at all.

An speaker, leader from the battling ILWU was warmly
received at one of the rallies during the day when he
explained how the struggle of the union against the
Taft-Hartley Act was the same struggle that that of
immigrants against the Patriot Act.

The media was absolutely muted about the event.
