The American Political Paradox: More Freedom, Less Democracy
Mike asks, "Let me guess: is Jensen a social democrat ?" But so what, if he
is (I wouldn't know) ?
Would you rather not get along with people like Jensen ? Suppose you were
studying journalism - would you rather have Jensen or some conservative who
believes that President Bush expresses the fullest realisation of American
democracy, and has a philosophy of journalism consistent with that ? Let's
not get hung up on labels, let's search for sharp ideas behind the labels -
as you say, he makes some "interesting comments".
The traditional American concern with freedom is one of the biggest assets
which socialists have there, and a lever for progressive political
movements. If you tried saying something like that in some other countries,
you would be likely to face some kind of repression.
