Re: Divestiture controversy
First of all, Foxman is a pathetic character; his adjectives may impress a 3
year-old but he can't back anything up. It is enough to recall that Mandela
and Tutu both describe Israel as practicing apartheid, and Israel's own
Attorney General Ben-Yair (1993-1996) called his nation's treatment of
Palestinians as "injurious" and "apartheid"
as well. Anyone familiar with the checkpoints, bypass roads, and land
distribution system of the JNF can confirm
that Israel practices apartheid.
"I seem to recall reading somewhere,
that Herzl did correspond with Rhodes, and that he
sought out his support for his own scheme."
This is undoubtedly correct:
"Naturally there are big difference between Cecil Rhodes and my humble self,
the personal ones very much in my disfavor, but the objective ones greatly
in favor of our movement."
These are Herzl's words, as cited in Uri Davis's "Israel: An Apartheid
State", published
in 1987 by Zed Books, pages 3 and 4.
Of course, Rhodes was nothing compared to Hitler, with whom the Zionist
Federation of
Germany tried to form a political and military alliance from 1933 onwards
(see Lenni Brenner, The
Iron Wall).
I believe the best and most comprehensive works on the core issues of
Zionism vis. Palestine are
as follows:
Tom Segev's "1949: The First Israelis", excerpts of which is located at
palestineremembered.com; this has a lot
of information of the mass plunder and looting the Jewish militia and the
IDF engaged in during and after the war;
Benny Morris's "Righteous Victims", even though Morris is not sympathetic to
the Palestinians, the point is that
he, like Segev, has consulted newly-declassified portions of Israeli
archives which shed some light on Zionism's
attitude and actions early on in Palestine;
"The War for Palestine:1947-1949", edited by Avi Shlaim and someone else, by
far the best read because
it contains the latest writings of historians using the latest archive
material, including updated and more straitforward admissions from Benny
Morris about Zionist expulsion plans, and Avi Shlaim's own decisive
contribution in showing how disorganized, weak, and pathetic the so-called
Arab 'invasion' really was, in contrast
to the Zionists' discipline and training.
For starters, though, I'd check out this simple pamphlet that is full of
useful quotes from scholarly sources:
