ANSWER, NION, Vietnam
I note the re-emergence in The Nation of another classic red-baiting slur
-- we who opposed the war in Afghanistan are held to be, in effect,
"prematurely antiwar." So anyone who spoke up before, I suppose, Gore's
speech is ideologically suspect.
I agree with Louis that Nation types shouldn't be permitted to drive a
wedge between NION and ANSWER.
But what happens when the liberal mainstream tries to take over the
movement for their own purposes -- as I think is inevitable as things get
worse domestically and in Iraq, and as we approach the next Presidential
election? My hunch is they'll swoop in along NION's right flank, trying to
coopt much of the NION crowd and effectively purging anti-Zionists while
isolating ANSWER. How should leftists then respond?
I'm not asking this rhetorically; I'm wondering how a similar though hardly
identical situation played out during Vietnam and would love to hear from
those who lived through it.
