THOUSANDS TO DEMAND AMNESTY FOR IMMIGRANTS, DRIVERS
LICENSES FOR NON-CITIZENS,DEFEND CIVIL LIBERTIES AND
AGAINST WAR
More than 70 organizations to hold a cultural festival
with tables and booths, speakers and community
organizing

Immigrant Pride Day 2002, an event endorsed and
organized by more than 70 unions, community
organizations and political groups, will
feature speakers, a movie theater, one stage with
international folk music, dance and performances,
another one with hip-hop, rap and rock in Spanish and
informational tables and booths. The event will take
place on Saturday, October 12, 2002, from 10 AM to 5PM
in San Francisco's Mission District. The event will be
held at 24th and Mission, right next to the 24th and
Mission BART station.

We are living in times when the government is applying
repressive measures against immigrants, passing
legislation to further erode our Civil Liberties and
expects immigrants and Americans in general to
embark in the unending "war on terrorism" against
peoples and nations around the world. In that
atmosphere, hate crimes against immigrants
and people of color are rising. Thousands have been
detained since September 11 without being charged with
any crime, many deported without recourse.

Immigrant Pride Day 2002 is a pro-active,
community-based response to these threats to our
rights and our lives. It is designed to educate,
organize and mobilize the "invisible" population of
California, the more than 25% of its people, the
immigrants.

It is a day to celebrate immigrants' social, cultural,
and economic contributions to the country, as well as
a day to educate everyone on the achievements and the
culture of those who contribute daily to our
society without any recognition, forced, for the most
part, into a category of virtual apartheid.

During the event a "Popular Consultation" will take
place, where immigrants and their allies will be asked
to cast their opinions on a number of critical
political issues, such as the Bush Administration's
war plans, the USA PATRIOT Act, the US government's
decision to increase harassment of immigrants after
September 11, as well as their opinion about
California Governor Gray Davis' decision
to veto the "Drivers' Licenses for Immigrants Bill."

Mission Street and Van Ness, Mission District, San
Francisco.
