Re: Mormon church makes anti-war statement

Not a whit surprised at Michael Keaney, either -- although the abrupt
emergence in this setting of several experts on Christianity in general and
Mormonism in particular is certainly intriguing if not startling. But,
again, I doubt that Bro. Keaney has ever had any in-depth direct
relationship or experience of any kind with Mormons or the LDS church as an
institution. Google-searches only go so far. [Last I, personally, heard
from him, he was endeavoring to mount some sort of defense of the Swedish
Finns -- many of whom, of course, are gallingly elitist and culturally
ethnocentric. Again, just confirmed by my Finnish/Saami spouse.]

The Spirit World perceptions of any theology are always fascinating to
me -- but I take the general Native view that everyone goes to some sort of
future happiness. When a visiting Catholic daughter-in-law raised a
question recently about retroactive Mormon baptism, I pointed out that
anyone in the Spirit World can undoubtedly -- and in gracious fashion --
push that one away.

A Mohawk direct ancestor of mine and culture hero, John Gray [Ignace
Hatchiorauquasha], active in the Far Western fur trade, the fighting leader
of the Iroquois fur hunters in that turbulent setting, and an ally of the
Flathead Nation -- himself much involved throughout what's now Idaho and
Montana and the eastern sections of Washington and Oregon -- was the sworn
enemy and very vocal critic of the Presbyterian missionary, Marcus Whitman,
who later, with Mrs. Whitman, abruptly entered the Eternal at the hands of
the Cayuse Indians. And St Ignatius of Loyola is -- as with many members of
our family over many generations -- my patron saint and the word from that
former Spanish captain was/is always "No Protestante!" Still, I see the
Presbyterians -- despite their very strange Calvinistic beliefs -- as a
mainline Christian denomination. However, we never enter the Whitman Hotel
and Coffee Shop here at Pocatello, Idaho.

And the long-time winter camp setting [ca. 1816 through most of the 1830s]
of John Gray and his large family is in a partially hidden valley only a
half mile from our 'way up home right here. We do go there very
frequently -- much more so then we do the local Catholic Church [of which we
are indeed members.]
