Camejo and Nader: the contrast
I went to the Green Party rally at the Berkeley
Community Theatre today. A little over 1,500 people
there. They had the statewide ticket as warming up
speakers. Some of them said one or two interesting
things, mostly a group of amateurish politicians with
a long learning process ahead. Lerner, from Tikkun,
made a moralistic speech about the need to unify
people on the basis of being human beings and promoted
hiw new efforts for the Tikkun campus organizing and
his Tikkun "Community." I recently read some critical
pro-Zionist commentary presenting him in a new
"radical" and "fiery" image that I failed to see
tonite. Camejo was kind of OK, he was received with an
ovation and he made an enthusiastic, campaign speech,
made a good joke or two about Davis and Simon. His
best part was his critique of US foreign policy,
attacked the Democrats for their submission to Bush's
plans. Good recounting of some of the US policies
abroad: Nicaragua, Grenada, Phillipines, Nagasaki and
Hiroshima, etc but felt short of an anti-imperialist
position against the war. Gave a succint review of
the political and economic reforms proposed by his
campaign. Was the best speaker of the night. Nader
was received with an even bigger ovation, one or two
times, when he mentioned Bush's war plans he was
applauded like asking him for more. He talked a
little about civil rights and lots about corproate
corruption. In synthesis, he said that the
insitutions, the politicians from both parties and
politics in general were corrupted int he US and that
people was NOT responding with "indignation" and he
took pain in describing in detail what he meant for
"civic indignation." He sounded depressed and
negative, pessimistis and tired. He said basically
that people in the US have mroe information than they
needed but that they are not reacting to that
information. "They are just internalizing that it is
their fault." People started leaving the meeting well
before he was over speaking. Luckily, the Greens
seemed to have collected around $15,000 in tickets
sold and about $45,000 more at a collection and
fundaraising after Camejo spoke and before Nader kind
of threw his bucket of cold water. His cynicism did
not fare well with many new people in politics that
came for the first time to hear him speak and paid
$10-12 per person to do so. Nader seemed very
affected and demoralized by the reactionary
conjuncture in the US and the degree of support for
the thieves and cheaters, liars and warmongers in the
White House and Congress.
