Re: Mormon church makes anti-war statement

[Second try, a bit expanded. First shot an hour or so ago didn't get
through.]

Very briefly:

The Mormons, who traditionally have simply wanted to be left
alone themselves, would certainly have no reason to go after the Muslims --
especially when they've always respected those common theological
roots as they have those of the Jews. Basically, the Mormons -- though
not pacifists -- are peaceful.

Anyway, no ulterior motive at all. When the LDS church speaks -- whether one
agrees
with it or not -- it always speaks very clearly and directly. The Mormons
draw their
visionary inspiration from Christianity whose teachings -- interpreted
honestly -- are extremely radical.

The LDS church is a major, mainline Christian
denomination and its stance on War is very much like that of the other major
groups [minus, of course, the very hawklike Southern Baptists, who have
plenty of anti-war dissidents even in their camp.] The Robertson/Falwell
thing is a Never land of its own -- and an obviously dangerous one. I would
conjecture that the fact the Mormon leadership is essentially "lay" and
still predominately male [changing slowly] does mean that many of the
Church's leaders have seen actual military service and have drawn
appropriate conclusions [in contrast to the recently and quite justifiably
attacked Chickenhawks.]

As I indicated, I didn't find the recent anti-War
statement from the highest LDS levels at all surprising. It will carry
considerable and very important positive weight in the Rocky
Mountain/Intermountain/Southwestern regions -- and in other some other lands
as well.
