Semiotics is not my field.

Let's put it this way:
I ain't never seen no Rebel Flag, as its lovers call it,
in any procession of oppressed, African-American workers
fighting for their rights, but I have seen it brazened
by their violent opponents over and over again
--enough to make it a symbol of repression,
and identified as such by most people.
