Re: rebel flag flap in Dixie
I have found that the job of the academic historian is not to simplify
the past but to demonstrate how complex things are--and thus why we need
their professional expertise. I am not saying that to simplify
things...
I have yet to come across an Asian-American, let alone an
African-American, nor a Latino/a proudly wearing the
Confederate Flag. I suggest that may be because of that
particular symbol's racist resonances that ring so clearly
in American history.
By the way, the "Stars and Bars" is not the X-shaped,
starred, blue cross on red ground. On the subject of
flags' names, I wonder, this being an international and
internationalist list, if non-American comrades harbour
any particular negative feelings about "The Battle Flag
of the Republic"? That is one of the names for the flag
of the United States of America, a.k.a. "Old Glory."
Did you know that many, many Americans feel deep
emotional attachments to that symbol becasue they
believe it stands for all that is good in the world?
Actually, I must confess, that I have an almost anarchistic
aversion to flags. But they do fascinate me, like the stripes
of tigers and the spots on certain predators' coats. For that
reason I am not totally against individuals or organizations
who sport that device, the Confederate Flag. Like an L.A.
gang member, they show their (true) colours.
