Symbols are a problem, because they can mean lots of different kinds of things
to different persons.  It adds a whole new layer to the arguments.

The Confederate flag made its sort of public reappearance in association with
both the Civil War Centenniel and the White Citizens' Councils' opposition to
the civil rights movement.  It has always had this dual assocaition, not simply
one of white supremacism, but also as one of the few recognizable symbols of
historical association and group identity of what was, until the 1940s, the
poorest part of the United States.
