Christopher Hitchens and the Nation

I sent this to the Guardian after they printed Hitchens' piece saying why he
is not writing for the Nation any more. It hasn't appeared.

To the Editor

Dear Sir

Christopher Hitchens' defection to the camp of President George W Bush and
his Middle Eastern crusade ('The Final Dispatch', Guardian, 30 September) is
about as original as his pal Martin Amis' recent discovery that Stalin was a
nasty man. Years ago, Hitchens put his trust in us ordinary folk to change
the world for the better. Disappointed at our inability so far to do this,
he now goes off in a huff and seeks salvation for the world via those whom
he once would have denounced as corrupt, bigoted and dangerously incendiary.
Oh well, one more man overboard -- just don't expect us to throw him a
life-belt.

Yours faithfully

Paul Flewers
