This is the key point. Hobsbawm's views on Irish nationalism were put
forward during a period of intense struggle, when the British State was
waging all out war on the Irish. In truth Hobsbawm provided them with
ideological cover.
His views on writing Irish History quite simply resolve themselves into
this maxim :- Only those who support British Imperialism are capable of
writing Irish History.
