Re: bourgeois feminism?

[ quoted text snipped ]

In reponse to Chris Brady's message:
I think there's a great deal to be confused about by Ashcroft's "male
chauvinist, patriarchal protection racket." Certainly there is the noblese
oblige of feudal knights you talk about, but, broadly speaking, what is
distinct about Ashcroft's concern for women in the middle-east has to do
with the simple fact that we are not living in feudal europe. Ashroft's
concerns play precisely on the contemporary cultural climate in this
country, of which feminism in its various forms has been an important
contributing factor. As such, Ashcroft is appealing not only to traditional
redneck, nationalist, masculinist impulses, but also to what I had been
overgenerally referring to as multiculturalism (meant really as a shoft hand
for all the forms of micro-politics and identity politics that have emerged
since the sixties).
