Invitation to the 2nd Landless Peoples Assembly in South Africa

[ converted from html]

09 July, 2002

Dear Comrades and Friends;

The Landless Peoples Movement (LPM) and the National Land Committee
(NLC) of South Africa hereby invite you to attend and participate in
the Second International Landless Peoples Assembly to be held in
Johannesburg, South Africa during the upcoming World Summit on
Sustainable Development. The first assembly, held in August 2001 as a
parallel process to the World Conference Against Racism, attracted
more than 3500 landless delegates from South Africa and other parts of
world. The second assembly will form part of the activities of the
Week of the Landless to be held from 27 August to 1st September.

The main objectives of the Week of the Landless are:

1. To strengthen landless peoples movements and organisations;
2. To build and further strengthen international solidarity and
struggle (such as against the World Bank land policies); and
3. To force land onto the agenda of the WSSD as a central demand of
the landless people of the world.

While the assembly itself will be held on 29 August 2002, we hope that
you will participate in all the other activities planned for the Week
of the Landless, including the first official National Assembly of
South Africa's Landless People's Movement; a Day of Solidarity
including visits to communities facing forced removals; a March of the
Landless and a Landless People's Concert. Please see the poster below
for further details of the week's events.

If you are unable to attend the Week of the Landless, we specifically
request that you send messages of solidarity to be read during the
assembly. Those organisations who do attend will be given time to
share their messages with the assembly. The second International
Landless People's Assembly is expected to attract more than 5000
delegates and to offer a space for reflection and solidarity for the
growing struggles of landless people in South Africa and across the
world.

In struggle,

Andile Mngxitama
Land Rights Coordinator
National Land Committee

Patrick Mojapelo
LPM Interim National Chairperson
