Re: Deregulation Kills

Just a sidenote to Louis' recent post. Anyone interested will note that the
private sector interests have been pushing the recent mid-air collision as
an example of the need to integrate the European Air Traffic Control system.

While such a move is entirely justified as a form of integration, we must
ensure that the system remains within public control. Private sector
interests will only pursue profit at any cost. Passengers and crew members
lives will be unnecessarily lost and as much of the air traffic control
systems throughout EU member states are already privatised - it seems
unlikely that the new system will be state-run or run by a Trust (or
non-profit taking enterprise).

It is these recent moves by the EU and its private sector allies which have
resulted in the rolling strikes across the sector in Europe and the
subsequent huge disruption to flights. One final point to illuminate the
need to fight privatisation (which should popularise the struggle) is that
central European private sector interests have just reduced safety distances
between flights by 50% - clearly, this is to enable greater numbers of
flights at the cost of an increase in the number of near misses.
