Re: Yahoo! News - FBI begins visiting libraries to monitor reading habits of those
I brought this up with the UUP -- the union at the University where I work.
They were, on the face of it, wonderfully responsive and say they plan to
make an issue of it. Apparently records indicating who checked out what
were never kept until a couple of months ago when a "smart" ID card was
introduced -- one which is theoretically capable of storing all sorts of
information. The administration at that time promised not to store library
records, but who knows?
The most disturbing part is the requirement that these FBI searches be kept
secret -- the administration could argue that it is legally required NOT to
disclose that it is keeping and revealing records of this kind. They may
already be cooperating and we might never know.
And realistically, there's no chance the University will dare to mount a
legal challenge.
