Greek CP against War on Terror
Greek Communists urge international action against war
or terror
Sun Jun 23, 7:26 AM ET
ATHENS, Greece - Greece's Communist Party urged
cooperation between protest groups around the world
against the US-led war on terrorism, at an
international Communist meeting Sunday.
"This struggle against terrorism is an excuse ... to
extend imperialism and plunder the rest of the world,"
Aleka Papariga, leader of the Greek Communist Party,
or KKE, was quoted as saying by the party newspaper
Rizospastis.
Communist and workers' parties from more than 60
countries, including the United States, Israel and
North Korea, attended the three-day gathering in
Athens that ended Sunday, organizers said.
Papariga said plans were already being drawn up to
stage protests next summer when European Union leaders
will meet in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki,
marking the end of a Greek presidency of the EU.
Greece's KKE polled 5.5 percent of the vote at the
last general election and is the only mainstream party
which favors the country's withdrawal from NATO and
the European Union.
