Old discussion

I will be brief:

My take on the discussion about organization. Louis
has an idealist position. Somehow the organization
will be created by big events forcing big movements
and all kinds of people coming together and realizing
they have more in common than not.

That is not new: from those who proposed the "movement
is everything" to Deutscher who opposed the formation
of the IV International because was "not born of big
historical events" to a whole variety of other people
proposed such a path and just wait for that to happen.

History demonstrated that organizations were not born
out of big events, but were prepared before them.
Otherwise, you won't have one - or you will have
another sect, which will be late to the appoitment
with the masses.

My advise: since the organization is a tool - and not
an end in itself - get involved in whatever
organization is closer to your intelligence or heart
or ideas or instinct or to a combination of the above
factors and grow from there, not expecting to find
geniuses who will "guide" you but seeing yourself as
part of the building team.

Sitting in front of your computer writing messages 10
hours a day will only grow your wasteline, not an
organization. Use the new technology to the extent you
can, but be warned that that is not enough. You need
to get into the dirty business of political action and
that is only done inter-acting with the working class
and the youth, in the neigborhoods and unions, in
elections and insurrections, in study groups and
demonstrations ...making sure, as the Bolsheviks used
to say "illuminating every practical task with the
theoretical development of the organization."

In other words, and this started as a thread around
the DSP in Australia. If you live down there, you'd
be better off in the DSP than in the ALP or the local
internet cafe. Of course, this is just my opinion.
