Chile Will Privatize a New Span of Its Noted Social Safety Net

SANTIAGO, Chile ? Two decades after Gen. Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship
made Chile the first country with a privately run pension system, its
nominally Socialist government [sic] is relinquishing another part of
the social safety net. Its plan will allow the private sector to manage
the nation's unemployment insurance system.
Like the pension program, which has been adopted in some degree by a
half-dozen other Latin American countries, the unemployment insurance
system will rely on market forces.
