Irish books
I recall this book utilized a historical materialist interpretation of
the Irish famine and diaspora:
Emigrants and exiles : Ireland and the Irish exodus to North America
by Kerby A. Miller
New York : Oxford University Press, 1985
Miller's description of the Irish too poor to pay for an American voyage
crawling ashore at Lachine, Quebec, in rags, sick and starved, in such
horrifying conditions that the local French Canadian residents
were terrified by them and --unable to understand who those desperate,
hollow eyed beggars were or what they were up to-- turned them away in
mid of winter off the icy St. Lawrence.
I remember reading that with deep sadness,
and curse the forces and men that made such misery.
I sincerely do, to this minute,
Chris Brady.
