what's up in Venezuela?
VENEZUELA: U.S. WARNS CITIZENS
World Briefing: Americas
June 12, 2002
The State Department is advising Americans in Venezuela
or traveling there to take extra precautions because of
"the unstable political environments and unpredictable
security situation." The statement was issued before a planned
demonstration this week against President Hugo Chávez ?
who was briefly ousted from power in April ? and as
rumors circulated that members of the military were
plotting a new coup. The statement superseded one issued
in May, after Mr. Chávez returned to power, which noted
"an improvement in Venezuela's political and security
situation." (Agence France-Presse)
