I hesitated before describing the US, British and Australian CPs as sects
because of this factor, as well as the other support bases they had had at
different times. I eventually decided that I could justify the description,
given the comparative narrowness and shallowness of their support within the
working class as a whole, especially since I was comparing them with the
relatively huge French and Italian parties, and I was mainly considering
their first couple of decades, before they reached their peak.
They certainly weren't anywhere near as sad as most of the groups that
preceded, coexisted with, and succeeded them. We have a lot to learn from
them, especially about what they did _right_. What they did wrong will no
doubt continue to fascinate the sectarians.
