Re: Slavery in Brazil.
The continuing existence of bonded slavery and/or forced labour in Brazil,
ever since the abolition of chattel-slavery in 1888, is a well-known fact.
But I find Mr. Rother's wording of the title very, very disgusting, a piece
of bourgeois philisteism, as the target intended seems not to be Brazilian
slavery - in which case Mr. Rother, living in Rio, would explain that it was
recently exposed in the Brazilian papers that the former Speaker of the
Braz. House of Representatives and Cardoso's minion Inocêncio Oliveira was
found to be a slave owner, as he had engaged some 20 farmhands in his farm,
without signing their emplyment booklets (that's to say denying them social
security) and of paying each a monthly R$ 20, that's to say less them US$
10.
Such unmasking was made possible by the fact that the present sordid quarrel
between the rival presidential candidates from Cardoso parliamentary basis,
Ms. Sarney from the Liberal Party (already caught with some US$ 500,000,
cash, from unknown procedence in her office) and Mr. Serra from the
"Social-Democratic" party, has led to a very effective mudslinging from
Cardoso's party as against breakaway "liberals".
I wonder why Mr. Rother did not include this piece of news in his
report....Prehaps because what he is really concerned about is justifying
American protecionism and the recent emergency measures for protecting
decaying American steelmills as part of a struggle "against slavery"?
