Cox's excellent summation
Carrol Cox wrote:
"Value is a social relation. The theory of value is not a 'theorem' in
neoclassical economics or a price theory or even a theorem in political
economy: it is a principle of the _critique_ of political economy. It is a
way of formulating class relations under capitalism -- more a theory of
culture than of economics in the modern (i.e. bourgeois) meaning of
economics."
The LTV and I are going in the same direction. I know I spread panic
and
ire when I take issue with a fundamentalist approach to the LTV but I'm not
sure why. So long as we don't go through mental gymnastics to try and fit
the LTV to reality it can stay, as far as I'm concerned, and welcome. I
didn't get to my ideas despite the LTV but because of it.
My intent is really to develop a language that can convince
capitalism-minded people of the fundamental virtue of socialism. We all
reside in the camp of the enemy, after all. The LTV is just so easy to poke
logical holes in that I find it of no value as a persuasive tool. I was
persuaded by it initially and became a Marxist but then I have always
doubted capitalist thinking. Not everybody has the luxury to be so
stubborn.
