I would also add that while Allende and the revolutionary leadership in Chile
were not clearly aware of either the Latin-American character of their
struggle, or its national-democratic character, Chavez is fully aware of both.
There were many reasons for the tragedy in Chile, but IMHO the main ones were
the insularity of the movement (no attempt was made at seeking a redress of
mutual grievances and a Federation of the Pacific with Bolivia and/or Peru, for
example) and the fact that most of its leaders (Allende to a great extent
excluded) imagined themselves as if they lived in a "bourgeois" country in the
sense that Switzerland is a bourgeois country. Thus, though most of the
measures that Allende took were correct and on the national-democratic agenda,
the ideological dead weight of a structure of mind based on the "reform" versus
"revolution", "bourgeois" versus "proletarian", oppositions, blindfolded many
at the highest level when imperialism began to act through the Army.
