Re: Love Hurts
Louis,
Marshall Sahlins' work synthesizes observations of hunter gatherers in
relatively recent times, but I took Joan's comments in an even wider
chronological sense. Most of our time as hunter gathererers was during the
last "ice age" and similar conditions. Going by the fossil record, it would
have taken some prettification to get it to the "nasty, brutish and short"
description.
In fact, the latest genetic work (coupled with the dating of volcanic events)
indicates a great population bottleneck around 73,000 years ago, indicating
that global population of the human race may have been reduced to 10,000 or
less.
Speculation about the ongoing jockying for status comes from feminist
commentaries and observations of our hairier cousins. ("Gendering the ape"?)
Solidarity,
Mark Lause
