RE: Questions of value and the development of economics

I want to back up Phil's choice of reading here as all of these books
played a large part in my beginning to understand Marx. Generally, I'd
agree with Phil, that you should start by Reading Marx but if you want
to get to grips with Capital, a close reading of Rubin's 'The History of
Economic Thought', really helps or it did with me. It fills in the
background to Bourgoise economic thought from a Marxist perspective. The
other Rubin book is best read after Capital as it isn't an easy read.

......But I'd like to suggest a couple of further really good things for
people interested in this area to read.

I.I. Rubin, 'Essays on Marx's Theory of Value', Detroit, Black and Red,
1972
I.I. Rubin, 'The History of Economic Thought', London, Pluto, not sure
of
date (but 2nd edition was in early 90s I think)

Paul Mattick also has a very good chapter on the degeneration of
bourgeois
economic theory in his 'Economic Crisis and Crisis Theory', which I
think
is published by Merlin Press (London) in 1980 (or it might be published
by
M.E. Sharpe).
