Actually, the age-ist comment was directed against Joe Freemen and it
came from Phil Ferguson. I think this confusion was a general symptom
of the problem that Joe brought to the list. He was polarizing the
list both through the Stalin nonsense and through a kind of
fetishized reading of Marxist value theory which served as a kind of
sectarian litmus test. I really don't think that he was guilty of
homophobic or sexist language before yesterday's outburst but I might
be wrong. I have a time-consuming job and responsibilities for a
family member who has been dealing with a serious illness recently.
This has limited my ability to scan every message carefully. At any
rate, Joe is gone and I expect the list to return to normalcy. Just
to put things into perspective, the list has been in existence since
May 1, 1998 and over 600 million bytes worth of information have been
transmitted. In that entire time, I believe that Joe's outburst was
the sole exception to what is considered permissible among
socialist-minded folks. I will certainly be more sensitive to such
offenses in the future.
