Re: marxism-digest V1 #4156

>>Still, there is no evidence that Karl played any games, and the only incident
I recall reading was of his being out on a drinking binge in London with
some
visitors from the contininent. Perhaps he was a bleecher bum?"

Actually, Marx was a good chess player in the romantic late 19th century
style - he played like a revolutionary optimist, in fact. He was fond of
the King's Gambit (1 e4 1 ...e4 2f4, etc). I would put him at about
US Expert strength. See The Complete Chess Addict by Mike Fox and
Richard James for a sample game. Lenin and Trotsky were also players,
although less impressive. The CCA reveals that a New York chess player,
when shown a newspaper with information about Trotsky's exploits during
the war against the whites, scoffed "Trotsky - ha! Him I could give
knight odds ..."

IMPARTIAL ADVICE

A number of pro-biotech and "scientific sceptic" websites recommend as
an "objective" source of "good" scientific information on biotechnology
a site called FACSNET; "A Free Site for A Responsible Press"
(www.facsnet.org). As usual on such sites there is limited information
about backers and funders, but a lot of protestations of independence,
talk of outreach programmes in schools, etc.

So I rang their UK number (0207 344 1236, listed on
http://www.facsnet.org/about/people/staff.html). "Hello" said a helpful
voice. "This is human resources". "Human resources for whom?" I asked.
"Edelman Public Relations", the voice said. Edelman is the "largest
independent public relations company in the world", and the fifth
largest of any kind.

Corporate clients include Nabisco and Kraft, not to mention Microsoft
and numerous other exciting megacorps.

V objective, I'm sure.
