It should be noted that a rigorous Marxist explanation of the emergence of
capitalism in Western Europe (the real reason for the 'ascendancy of the
west') is given by Perry Anderson in his Passages from Antiquity to
Feudalism and Lineages of the Absolutist State (both New Left Books, 1974).
Anderson that it was the particular configuration of western European
feudalism that provided the launch pad for capitalist take-off, and that the
particular configuration of western European feudalism owed much to
political/ideological survivals of the Roman Empire. I won't say any more on
this at the moment since I want to come back to Anderson in the near future.
