IRSP: 'No' Vote on Nice

Irish Republican Socialist Party
Press Statement

25 May 2001

IRSP Call for 'No' Vote

The Irish Republican Socialist Party have called for a strong 'No Vote' in
the run up to June 7th, Nice Treaty Referendum.

IRSP spokesperson Mr. Gerry Burns said, "Ratification of this Treaty will
abolish entirely any semblance of neutrality once held by the 26 county
administration. The IRSP call for the electorate to vote against
ratification for this reason and others.

"Why do the mandarins in Strasbourg want to enlarge the EU? The Taoiseach
and others such as Jim Mitchell in Fine Gael are openly advising people to
vote 'Yes' because they say 'it will provide Ireland with access to more
markets for her exports' thus being good for jobs, but will this prove the
reality?

"The IRSP maintain that any form of European enlargement has more to do
with providing 'big business' across the EU with access to cheap labour
sources in Eastern Europe than any attempt to find new markets that would
benefit the European working class.

Concluding, IRSP spokesperson Mr Burns said, "On the contrary, our party
calls on the Irish electorate to reject this attempt to exploit our fellow
peoples in Eastern Europe. Ratification of this treaty would serve only to
further enslave our fellow Eastern Europeans in the lottery of capitalism,
but also threaten jobs in multinationals based in Ireland, who would
eventually find some excuse to leave Ireland in favour of a location in
Eastern Europe."

Say 'No' to extended exploitation!

Say 'No' to abolishment of neutrality!
