The notorious henchman and assassin of the Batista dictatorship, Esteban
Ventura Novo, is dead of a heart attack

How hated this butcher was can be judged by the write-up below in El Herald,
official organ of the counterrevolutionary gusano mafia, highlighting some
of his crimes. Even the likes of rabidly pro imperialist editors of El
Herald could not see their way clear to hide this man's nature, even after
his death.

This terrorist jackal, needless to say, was welcomed with open arms by the
United States following the overthrow of the Batista dictatorship and
founded in Miami a rent-a-pig union-busting "security" firm in the interests
of the same masters he served so loyally in Cuba.

Anyone who wonders why the Cuban people would resist, year after year,
decade after decade, the U.S. efforts to reverse the revolution does not
need to even look up the gains in education, health care, life expectancy
and other social indices that have made Cuba the envy of Latin America and
the Third World.

I was seven years old when Ventura was driven out of Cuba in 1959. The
childhood nightmares of second graders in the United States were populated
by the Wicked Witch of the North and Godzilla, whereas their counterparts in
Cuba were haunted by whispered rumors about "the man in the White Suit"
(Ventura) and "the tigers" (the death squad run by another Batista assassin,
Masferrer).

For forty years, Cuban parents have had absolutely no reservations in
reassuring their frightened children in the middle of the night that it was
just a bad dream. If the revolution had accomplished nothing else, it would
have been enough. More than enough.

Fallece en Miami ex jefe de policía batistiana

El ex oficial de la policía cubana Esteban Ventura Novo, considerado uno de
los pilares represivos del gobierno de Fulgencio Batista (1952-1958),
falleció en Miami la tarde del lunes, víctima de un paro cardíaco. Tenía 87
años.

Nacido en 1913, Ventura se desempeñó como agente policial desde finales de
los años 30, pero adquirió notoriedad como jefe de la Quinta Estación de
Policía de La Habana durante la etapa final del régimen batistiano.

Por esos días, Ventura era conocido popularmente como ``El Hombre del Traje
Blanco'', pues acostumbraba pasearse elegantemente enfundado en saco y
pantalón de dril 100 o muselina inglesa. En 1958 ostentaba el grado de
coronel de la policía.

Al grupo operativo que dirigía Ventura se le atribuyen, entre otros, los
asesinatos del abogado Jorge Cabrera Graupera --cuyo cadáver apareció
brutalmente golpeado y torturado-- y del miembro del Movimiento 26 de Julio,
Marcelo Salado, quien fue ametrallado en plena calle poco después de ser
liberado, ambos en abril de 1958.

También Ventura encabezó la embestida armada del 8 de noviembre de 1958
contra un grupo de combatientes clandestinos, parapetados en la casa de
O'Farril y Goicuría, en el reparto habanero de La Víbora, considerada una de
las acciones memorables de la lucha urbana contra Batista.

Pero Ventura fue culpado por los llamados sucesos de Humboldt 7, donde
fueron
asesinados cuatro jóvenes revolucionarios el 20 de abril de 1957.

``Es un día muy feliz en mi vida, pues llevo cuarenta años esperando por la
muerte del asesino Esteban Ventura'', dijo ayer en Miami Osvaldo Fructuoso
Rodríguez, hijo de una de las víctimas de Humboldt 7. ``Yo nací sin padre
por
culpa de este hombre terrible''.

Osvaldo Fructuoso es hijo de Fructuoso Rodríguez, sorprendido y asesinado
ese
día junto a otros tres integrantes del Directorio Estudiantil Revolucionario
``13 de Marzo''.

Ventura escapó de Cuba en los primeros días de 1959 y se estableció en
Miami,
donde creó la firma de seguridad Preventive Security Service &
Investigation.

En el exilio publicó un polémico libro de memorias.

Le sobreviven su viuda Niurka y sus hijos Enna, Steven, Marcie, Esteban,
Nancy, Javier, Ada, Rosario, Serafina y Eddy.

El sepelio será hoy en el cementerio Woodlawn Park North, luego de una misa
en la Iglesia de St. Michael, sita en Flagler y la 29 avenida.

La familia prefirió hacer los funerales con carácter privado.
