Besides Shamanism and a (hardly unusual) flair for
self-promotion, I doubt Taussig has much in common
with
the late Carlos Castaneda, who, after publishing his
fraudulent doctoral dissertation about the
non-existent
Don Juan, abandoned academia for a wildly successful
career as a writer of fictional accounts of ostensibly
personal experiences. And I'm quite sure Castaneda had
no genuine interest at all in "getting into the
primitive mind".
