It seems to me the greatest mathematical genius of all time is lost in
prehistory. I would imagine that even homo erectus could count one
rabbit two rabbits three rabbits (or the equivalent). And two apples for
me, two apples for you.
But just consider the immense leap to 1 2 3 : not one or two or three
this or that but simply a naked 1 2 3. Threeness, not just three trees
or three skunks.
