Ah Carroll,
I had my finger on the Send button and this came through. I thought I had
you!! I was saying to myself 'Old age has set in. He broke more than his
wrist!'
I love the ending of Dover Beach. I hear what you are saying and feminists
have made much of the role of women as consolation for a world largely
created by men. Still there is locked away inside this particular mystical
shell - a kernel and it is quite Blochian in its hinting at the possibility
of hope. The personal love and trust that the poem articulates amidst its
despair is a sign showing us that we are capable as a species of standing
up (Bloch's phrase) and being better.
regards
Gary
