Re: Joe Higgins speech in the Dail
When Joe Higgins came to the Labor Party convention a few years ago, Labor
Militant (no Socialist Alternative) held a meeting to introduce him to
contacts and other interested people. I went to the meeting.
Joe gave a very good speech on what the SP was doing in around working class
districts of Dublin. I like everything he said, really, and the way he
stated it, bringing socialist ideas to his constituents, organizing around
every day issues, and so on. Based on this the SP is a very attractive
organiztion.
It occurred to me (and some people I was with who were contacts of LM) that
Joe said not a word about the British occupation of Ireland or British
imperialism in general. Not a word. THIS is the problem that everyone has
eluded to. I say this out of profound respect for both Xxxx L. and his
comrade, Brian Cahill. But their position is...lame. I know more than a few
LM contacts around the country that would of joined LM had it not been for
this one position.
