in California.  No doubt the actual numbers are far larger.

State attorney general reports 236 hate crimes against Arabs since Sept. 11

Police are investigating an average of 10 anti-Arab hate crimes a day in six
major California cities since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the state
attorney general's office said Thursday.

The 236 crimes have targeted Arab-Americans, Muslims, Afghan-Americans,
Sikhs, Asians and others mistaken for Arabs or Muslims, said Attorney
General Bill Lockyer.

Between Sept. 11 and Sept. 30, the Los Angeles police and sheriff's
departments reported 167 hate crimes aimed at those groups; San Francisco
police, 43; San Jose police, 41; San Diego police, 40; and the Sacramento
sheriff's department five.

"Encouraging tolerance and understanding remains as important as ever to
prevent assaults against innocent Californians who are or appear to be of
Middle Eastern descent," Lockyer said in announcing the preliminary numbers.
