Native Murders in North Dakota -- Update

I recently posted, on several lists, my direct letter to the Grand Forks
[ND] Herald regarding the September 2001 murders of three Native men in and
around that small city [50,000] setting and its deteriorating
police/community relationships. While an Indian Studies prof at University
of North Dakota -- located at Grand Forks -- I had been active for many
years on a broad range of anti-racism [and labor] issues and very much
involved indeed with respect to the whole police situation. These three
murders had received very little media publicity. No one has as yet been
arrested. Although initially the Herald -- not always a friend -- seemed
reluctant to run my letter, [which I then sent to five other papers in the
state and a very large number of people], it has now done so. It
endeavoured to secure a statement from the police -- and gave them plenty of
time to get it in -- but did not receive anything by press time.

When the Herald published my letter -- today, October 12 -- it did so as a
very conspicuous editorial! We consider this a substantial media
breakthrough victory -- but there is, of course, a long way to go. But
things are now stirring nicely in that North Dakota setting. We shall keep
at it -- on that front as well as here in Idaho.

Here, if interested, is my letter as editorial:
